On Sunday 2nd December at the Pomme D’Eve in Paris it was our very great pleasure to present the five finalists of our Little Wonder Radio Plays’ “Breaking Boundaries” short audio-drama competition:
- The Fall by Zoe Grainge
- Buddha Hat by Clare Shaw
- Flamingo by Thoko Masikini
- Pride of Rotterdam by Tom Harvey
- Like Taking Candy from a Baby by Michael Lin
The event was performed by Stephanie Campion, Hannah Coyle, Taylor Scott, Alexandra Tomko. Johnny Palmer, and John Romano, and organised by the incomparable Moving Parts – Paris’ only bilingual playreading workshop.
The room was filled, the bar was excellent, the audience enjoyed themselves and a good night was had by all. This competition was limited to entrants of colour or with disabilities, the purpose being to give voice to groups that sometimes have a little more trouble getting feedback on their work or their plays read. Everyone who made the Longlist was given extensive notes from multiple judges and the chance to resubmit before the shortlist was chosen. And what a varied shortlist it was!
Here are a couple of very shaky videos from my phone, first from Buddha Hat:
And here from Flamingo:
At the end of the evening a vote was held, with votes cast in favour of all of the plays, but is my very great pleasure to announce that the winner was:
Like Taking Candy from a Baby by Michael Lin.
Congratulations Michael!
As you may know, we are currently running a general competition open to all. We are currently talking to the authors of all five plays about producing and publishing a version of their short, and we’ll keep you posted. Warmest congratulations to everyone on our shortlist, who produced wonderfully varied, thoughtful, often funny and frequently melancholy work that kept our audience talking into the night.
