Toby Frost is one of our writers (that’s how it works with Little Wonder – once you’ve written me a play I own you forever.) He’s also well known for his Space Captain Smith series of novels and for being an all round great bloke. Recently, he took the incredibly brave move of branching away from his publisher (with whom he still works) and self-publishing his passion project – a set of complex, multi-faceted urban fantasy novels known he has called the Dark Renaissance series. The second in the series, Blood Under Water, has recently been released and because we love Toby and his work, here’s a review of a book you definitely aught to go and buy.

Today we’re talking to our friend Toby Frost about his new Dark Fantasy novel “Up to the Throne”, and what it’s like taking the step into the brave new world of writing dark fantasy.
Hi Toby. Your new book, Up to the Throne,is now available for pre-order. What’s it about?
It’s about a woman who returns to the city-state where she grew up to take revenge on the criminal who scarred her and left her to die. Once, she was a petty criminal, but now she’s a seasoned thief-catcher and bounty hunter. However, he is no longer a mere gang leader but a powerful politician with his eyes on the throne. He will be extremely hard to kill – and if our heroine does take him out, something even worse will take his place.

Radio Charades have been talking about Radio!
No, don’t ask me what the OMGDCUYOY means – but the excellent Radio Charades was back last month, with some brilliant stuff from Toby Frost about how it feels to be a novelist writing his first radio play. Also something called the “DC Universe”, which I think involves men in tights comparing their mother issues.
OK, enough faking, yes, I saw Batman vs Superman, and yes, I think Ben Affleck is the best Batman since Michael Keaton [screw you Dark Knight fans]. But read on, to see how you can find our more from a successful novelist about the transition to radio.
