Dannie Cohan is a determined, career driven lawyer, in a relationship with a supportive, career driven man and clear, purposeful five-year plan. Her best friend Bella couldn’t be more different – flighty, prone to fall in love at the drop of a hat, and desperate that Dannie find more romance in her life.
And… that’s all I’m going to say about what happens. Seriously, try not to read the blurb. The less you know about this book going in, the better. You’re in for some glorious surprises.
This book hits you with a real one two. First of all, after establishing the characters, it hits you with a hugely imaginative twist – the sort of thing that would be completely at home in a speculative fiction novel. It’s brilliant, it frames the rest of the book without dominating it, and it adds a level of mystery that will keep you hooked searching for clues on every page.
Alongside the mystery, this book has a lot of great things to say about the legitimacy of loving your job, of feeling how you feel regardless of whether it’s the most sensible thing, and opening yourself to friendship. This book is full of good people, not all of whom have the best of times, not all of whom make the best choices, but whose motives make sense and who have something to teach us about all kinds of love.
Then the book follows up its jab with a right hook, the mystery is followed up by another huge surprise, and I don’t want to say any more other than a) there’s a decent chance this book will make you cry (I had to stop reading and go sit in the park for an hour), b) it’s beautifully written, and c) this book isn’t going where you think it’s going, but where it goes is brilliant.
So, if you’re looking for a hot romance with a clean HEA, leave this on your reading pile. But put it on your reading pile. Because when you’re ready for it, this book is fantastic.
