I am delighted to announce the shortlist for the 2018 Little Wonder Radio Play Competition is as follows:
Driverless by Annie Fox
Final Goodbye by Steven Lancefield
Gladiator by Stephanie Weston
Less than Three by Tom Kinney
The Adventures of a Gay Man: Birth of a Hero by Kris Thompson
Warmest congratulations to all our shortlistees, and to everyone on the longlist who worked so hard to revise and improve their work. We were blown away not only by the overall quality, but the quality of response to our feedback and the effort you all put in to improve. I sincerely hope to see more work from all of you in the future.
On 16th December all 5 listed pieces will be read and recorded before a public audience, who will then vote for a winner. Their votes will be combined with those of our judges, and the final winner will be announced on New Year’s Eve.
I have already been in touch with one or two people who didn’t make it this far, and you may yet receive and email from me about your work. If you were on the longlist and would like some feedback, please get in touch and I’ll come back to you as soon as I can. And whether we speak again or not, please, please remember what an awesome achievement it is to complete a play, submit it (very scary), and have it considered and appreciated by judges. You’re all heroes.
Star Trek on the Radio (Sort Of)
This week we got back on track after all our IT problems and released an original play: “First Officer”, a sci-fi adventure with spaceships, explosions and devious betrayal. You can listen to it below and then click on the “more” button for some discussion about the making of the play and what we learned.
But first, the play:

Sucks, doesn’t it.
So, you didn’t make the longlist. You read the list of names. Then, you read it again. Then, if you’re like me, you went looking for chocolate.
All our judges are writers. That means all of us, at some point, have been rejected. Again, and again, and again. Rejected when we’ve poured our hearts and souls into a piece of work. Rejected when we really thought we’d got it this time. It hurts. I’m sorry. We don’t want anyone to feel like that.
The most important thing to remember is that rejection is part of the process and happens to everyone. In this post I’m going to talk a little about how we made our decision, the most common mistakes that kept people off the longlist, and those qualities that saw our 17 longlistees make it through. Hopefully you’ll find it useful – more importantly, you should find it encouraging.
We are delighted to announce the Longlist for our 2018 short radio competition. 17 entries were selected from an incredible 298 submissions. Hit “more” to find out who they were:

The judges have judged, and the Longlist for the Little Wonder Short Radio Drama Competition 2018 has been compiled. We will announce the names and plays on Monday at noon Paris time, but between here and there we will be tweeting 50 “yes” comments from our judges in 10 batches across Saturday and Sunday. This will help you get an idea of what our judges liked and were looking for, as well as keeping us all exciting for the big announcement!
Please remember that critiques of plays are by their nature subjective, and that a “Yes” from one judge was not enough to get a play on the longlist. That being said, feel free to get terrifically over-excited if you think you spot a comment about your play 😉
