When someone watches your film or play, reads your book or short story, listens to your audio drama or podcast, they are making an investment of time. Every minute could be spent on something else: their family, the washing up, playing computer games, or god-forbid another writer’s work. Every minute they give you must give them more than they’ll get from getting up and going somewhere else. Otherwise, guess what they’ll?
Yet writers rarely think in terms of time. We talk about word limits, when we have one,
or target word counts, when we’re trying to convince ourselves we can sell our
150,000-word teen thriller. But time eludes us. In this article I’m going to
talk about how to think about your writing in terms of the readers use of time,
and points in your story where time is especially important.
You’ve recently released your new novel, Dead Remnants. What’s it about and who would like it?
When a threat looming over the dead and the living is exposed, a ghost teenager has to race across the Wild West afterlife, phantom posse in tow, to save her friend and the world.
Dead Remnants would appeal to folks who like Joss Whedon, Stephen King, and Neil Gaiman. It’s a wild, crazy ride, filled with phantom buffalo and nefarious ghost cowboys.
At the moment, the best way to do so is via Kickstarter. Here’s an explanation with diagrams for how
you can do this, and why crowdfunding is so important to the successful launch
of an indie novel.
To celebrate the launch of my first novel, Vile, we are
holding two parties. The first is in London on December 7th and the
second in Paris on December 14th. These are ticketed events, both
because of limited space and to help fund the launch of the book. Tickets are
bought through the Kickstarter, but don’t worry, you get a lot for your money –
a signed copy of the book, champagne and a buffet for the 30 euro ticket and if
you splash out on the VIP ticket you also get a bag of goodies to go with your
book.
In this article I’m going to give details of the dates and
times of the parties, exactly how to find them, and how even the most
computer-phobic amongst you can use Kickstarter to buy your ticket. I hope to
see you all there!
Here it is. After four years of work my first novel is now available, with a cover designed by the marvellous Claire Peacey of https://cpeacey.wixsite.com/autumnsky. If you’d like to get your hands on some goodies and help me promote the book, check out the Kickstarter at https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/vile/vile. And here’s the beautiful cover she made for me:
In this article I’m not just showing off my new book. I want to share 8 simple, practical tips I learned from self-publishing my book. I’m sure I’ll learn more lessons in the future. But these were things I found out by doing it, and maybe they’ll be useful to you.
